The short answer: best months for most trips
Choose April, May, early June, September or early October for the best balance of weather and sightseeing. These months suit first-timers planning long days around Alfama, Baixa, Chiado, Belém and viewpoints, especially with an on-foot plan like our 3 days in Lisbon itinerary.
Choose June for festivals. The Festas de Lisboa fill the month, and Santo António is not just a generic summer saint here: Visit Portugal says he was born near the Cathedral in Alfama around 1193. Today the parties still concentrate in old neighbourhoods including Alfama, Mouraria, Graça, Bica and Bairro Alto.
Choose July or August for dry weather and beach rhythm, not for monument-hopping at noon. August is Lisbon’s hottest month in the IPMA 1991–2020 normal, and the same normal sheet records an extreme maximum of 43.3°C on 4 August 2018.
Choose winter for museums, restaurants and a calmer cultural trip, as long as you can accept rain. January and February are mild by northern European standards, but wet days are part of the deal.
Lisbon month by month: weather, crowds and costs
Climate figures below come from the IPMA 1991–2020 Lisbon / Instituto Geofísico normal. Treat them as planning averages, not a replacement for a 7–10 day forecast. Hotel prices vary by week, event and availability; for price-sensitive trips, compare live booking sites and monthly ADR/RevPAR data from TravelBI.

Spring: long walks before the heat
March to May is Lisbon’s most comfortable walking stretch. March still has rain, but the average high rises to 18.9°C, which is enough for relaxed neighbourhood routes between showers. It is a good season for Alfama stairs, Graça viewpoints and the castle area before the climbs feel like a summer workout.
April is warmer, greener and busier. In 2025 it was Lisbon’s busiest month for cruise calls, with 55 calls and 98,686 cruise passengers, so Baixa, Alfama streets near the waterfront and major tram stops can feel crowded on ship-heavy days. That is a reason to plan carefully, not to skip April.
May may be the easiest all-rounder. The average high reaches 23.1°C, rainfall drops compared with April, and the Cascais coast starts to make sense for half-days. Cascais municipality’s cited 2026 bathing season ran from 1 May to 30 September, but lifeguard dates, beach rules and water-quality notices change, so check current information before swimming.
Spring also has strong cultural pull. MONSTRA is a March animation festival; ModaLisboa lists March and October fashion-week editions; IndieLisboa often spans late April and early May. Always confirm annual dates, venues and ticket rules before booking around an event.
Summer: festas, beaches and slow afternoons
June is the bridge between sightseeing season and summer living. The average high is 26.1°C, and IPMA records only 14.1 mm of rain in the normal, so outdoor dinners and street plans become easier. It is also when Lisbon’s neighbourhood identity spills into the streets.
The Marchas Populares are a modern reinvention of older neighbourhood festivities. Lisbon City Council traces the official competition to 1932, when José Leitão de Barros promoted the idea through the press and the city adopted it into the official programme. Today, each bairro prepares costumes, choreography and original music for months before parading on Santo António night.
July and August are very dry by Lisbon standards. July averages only 2.6 mm of precipitation and 0.6 rainy days; August averages 5.4 mm and 1.1 rainy days. The trade-off is heat: August averages 10.2 days at or above 30°C and 6.8 tropical nights, when the minimum temperature stays at or above 20°C.
This is when the hills decide your itinerary. Visit Lisboa describes Graça as sitting at the top of one of Lisbon’s famous hills, and the São Jorge viewpoint requires a steep climb up toward the castle. In summer, walk early, save indoor or riverside plans for hotter hours, and let evenings do more of the work.
Beach days are the practical escape. CP’s Lisbon–Cascais line shows scheduled journeys from Cais do Sodré to Cascais taking 40 minutes, and Visit Cascais gives the same timing. Farther west, Guincho is not a gentle floating beach: Cascais municipality describes strong swell and strong winds, which is why it is linked with windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Autumn: warm evenings, film nights and rain risk
September is one of Lisbon’s best compromise months. The average high is still 26.6°C, the average low is 17.6°C, and rainfall remains far below October. If you want city walks plus Cascais or Costa da Caparica beach time, September often works better than July because you avoid the harshest heat.
It is also the month for MOTELX, Lisbon’s international horror film festival, which held its 20th edition in September 2026 at Cinema São Jorge and Cinemateca Portuguesa. Dates shift, but the pattern gives September a strong after-dark cultural reason to visit.
October is more complicated, but often rewarding. The average high is still 22.8°C, while rainfall jumps to 110.6 mm and 8.7 rainy days. Doclisboa commonly falls in October, ModaLisboa has an October edition, and restaurants feel especially appealing when the weather turns.
Cruise crowds are the other October variable. Lisbon Cruise Port recorded 369 cruise calls and 763,752 passengers in 2024, then 335 calls and 705,437 passengers in 2025. October was the biggest passenger month in 2024 and one of the top months in 2025, so check the current port calendar if daytime crowding around the waterfront, Baixa or Alfama matters to you.

Winter: museums, food and flexible plans
November is the wettest month in the IPMA normal, with 133.9 mm of precipitation and 9.9 days with at least 1 mm of rain. It can still be mild, with an average high of 18.1°C, but it is not the month for a rigid outdoor-only itinerary.
Check the conference calendar before choosing dates. Web Summit is scheduled for Lisbon in November 2026, and large events around Parque das Nações can affect accommodation prices, restaurant availability and traffic. If your dates overlap, book earlier and compare neighbourhoods.
December and January are cool, damp and atmospheric in the practical sense: good for lights, cafés and indoor breaks, but not guaranteed dry. Visit Portugal describes recent Christmas-market attractions including Wonderland Lisboa in Parque Eduardo VII, with a Ferris wheel and ecological ice rink, and Rossio Christmas Market in the lower city. Dates change annually.
February is better for travellers who like slow mornings and indoor culture. The average high rises to 16.4°C, and rainfall is lower than January. For rainy-day movement, read our guide to using public transport in Lisbon before you arrive.
Festivals and events to plan around
Lisbon’s calendar is strong, but annual dates, venues, ticket prices and free/paid rules change. Confirm with official event sites before booking non-refundable rooms.
- MONSTRA: animation festival, usually in March, with screenings, retrospectives and exhibitions.
- ModaLisboa: Lisbon Fashion Week, with March and October editions listed in the cited calendar.
- IndieLisboa: independent film festival, often spanning late April and early May.
- Lisbon Book Fair: held in Parque Eduardo VII in the cited edition, with hundreds of pavilions and many scheduled events.
- Festas de Lisboa: June is the main month, with the Santo António high point on the evening of 12 June.
- Jazz em Agosto: Gulbenkian jazz festival, around late July and early August in the cited edition.
- MOTELX: horror film festival, typically in September.
- Doclisboa: documentary film festival, typically in October.
- Web Summit: not a festival, but important for November accommodation and traffic.
- Christmas markets: late November, December and sometimes early January in recent editions.
Months to avoid for your travel style
Avoid August if your dream Lisbon trip is full-day hill walking, tram queues and exposed viewpoints. It is not a bad month; it is simply better for beach trains, shaded mornings and slower evenings. If you do visit then, save our Alfama walking tour for the coolest part of the day.
Avoid November if rain would spoil the trip. It is the wettest month in the climate normal, and major conferences can make accommodation planning harder when dates overlap.
Be cautious with April and October if you dislike cruise-day crowding. Both can be excellent for weather or culture, but recent Lisbon cruise data shows they can be especially busy. Check the current port calendar, because ship deployment changes by year.
Avoid assuming December and January are empty. They are calmer than summer for many sights, but holidays, markets, rain and shorter daylight still shape the trip. A flexible plan and a few indoor backups matter more than chasing a perfect forecast.
よくある質問
What is the best month to visit Lisbon?
May is the easiest single month for many visitors: warm, usually less hot than summer, and good for walking Lisbon’s hills. September is the best alternative if you want warmer evenings and possible beach time. June is the top choice for atmosphere if you want the Festas de Lisboa.
Is Lisbon too hot in August?
August can be tiring for heavy sightseeing. IPMA’s Lisbon climate normal makes it the hottest month, with an average high of 28.8°C and 10.2 days at or above 30°C. It works best if you plan early walks, shaded breaks and beach or riverfront time instead of full-day hill routes.
When is the rainy season in Lisbon?
Lisbon’s wetter stretch is broadly autumn to early spring, with November the wettest month in the 1991–2020 IPMA normal. October, December and January also see substantial rainfall. Rain does not usually mean every day is lost, but winter itineraries need indoor backups and shoes that handle slippery pavements.
When is the best time for beaches near Lisbon?
For a beach-plus-city trip, choose June to September, with September often the best balance of warmth and less intense heat. Cascais municipality’s cited 2026 bathing season ran from 1 May to 30 September. Always check current lifeguard coverage, water-quality notices and sea conditions before swimming.
Are cruise crowds a problem in Lisbon?
They can be noticeable in waterfront areas, Baixa and Alfama on heavy call days. Lisbon recorded more than 700,000 cruise passengers in both 2024 and 2025, and recent peaks included October and April. If crowding matters to you, check the port calendar and visit popular viewpoints early.
Is winter a good time to visit Lisbon?
Winter is good for museums, food, cafés and lower-key sightseeing, but it is not the safest bet for dry weather. January averages a 15.1°C high, while February averages 16.4°C, so it is mild compared with much of Europe. Pack for rain and keep plans flexible.
